Patterns in the Landscape:
found and reimagined
Each year, during the winter months, I find myself (almost unintentionally) creating a
collection of small paintings characterised by rich textures and an earthy, muted palette.
Working intuitively, the inspiration behind my work isn’t always obvious. It’s rarely a specific or direct translation from a source but more a collection of thoughts, feelings, recent experiences and snapshots of memories. However, upon reflection on this new work, I can ascertain that it was partly influenced by a retreat I attended earlier in the year.
My fascination with repetitive patterns prompted me to explore the landscape. I anticipated finding grasses and flora but nature offered me an unexpected gift, an unforgettable encounter with a butterfly! This gorgeous creature stopped in my path and hopped around me as I walked. With no camera to hand, I decided on blind drawing, capturing its wing shape from poised to resting.
Back at my studio, further studies of abstraction followed and organic forms developed - from here, more forms evolved and the repetition I was seeking emerged.
